Xinjiang,officiallytheXinjiangUyghurAutonomousRegion,isalandofstaggeringproportions,aplacewherethehorizonstretchesintoinfinityandthesheerscaleofnaturecommandsawe.Tocomprehend"howbigisXinjiang,"onemustfirstappreciateitsgeographicalfootprint.Spanninganimmense1.66millionsquarekilometers,itisChina'slargestprovincial-leveldivision,accountingforapproximatelyone-sixthofthenation'stotallandmass.Thisisnotmerelyanumber;itrepresentsageographicalexpansethatdwarfsmanycountriesandentirecontinents.ImagineencompassingtheentiretyofFrance,Germany,theUnitedKingdom,Italy,andSpainwithinasingleadministrativeboundary–that’sthekindofscalewe’retalkingaboutwhenwespeakofXinjiang.
